Required Documentation

Documentation can vary from consulate to consulate, so be sure to check with your consulate for any additional documents needed. For instance, the New York consulate requires birth and death certificates of non-Italian spouses in the line, while other consulates do not.

Documents

At a minimum, all consulates will require the following for each person in the line. All documents need to be certified copies in "long form":

  • Birth Certificates of ancestors
  • Marriage Certificates
  • Death Certificates of ancestors
  • Naturalization Certificates or No Record of Naturalization

All documents must be apostilled and many need to be translated to Italian (this may depend on the consulate).

Apostille

When a document is to be used in another country, it may be necessary to have the document authenticated. This is known either as an “apostille” or “certificate of authentication.” Examples of documents that are frequently authenticated are birth, marriage and death certificates.

Apostille requests need to be done in the state the records originated from. For example, a collaborator on this wiki has two birth certificates and a marriage certificate originating from Pennsylvania, and all other U.S. vital records in the line are originating from New York. So the two birth certificates and marriage certificate from Pennsylvania need to be apostilled in Pennsylvania, and the rest need to be apostilled in New York.

Links to apostille information can be found under the respective states in the Finding Documentation section of this wiki.
